The United States government, state legislatures and foreign governments also have shown significant interest in implementing cost-containment programs to limit the growth of government-paid healthcare costs, including price controls, restrictions on reimbursement and requirements for substitution of generic products for branded prescription drugs. For example, at the federal level, the government has shown substantial interest in taking a variety of measures aimed at lowering United States prescription drug prices to align with the lowest prices available for the same drugs in comparable developed nations (so called “most favored nation” pricing). At the state level, some legislatures have passed laws that regulate how manufacturers make the 340B Drug Pricing Program ceiling price available on the market.
